Cocktail gifts for South African home bartenders
The best cocktail gifts are the ones that get used weekly rather than displayed. Under R500: a citrus press, a good rocks glass, a bottle of vermouth kept in the fridge. Under R1 000: a Boston shaker set and a jigger. Around R1 500–R2 000: a smart pour coaster that weighs the drink for them.
The test a good bar gift has to pass
Bar gifts fail in a predictable way. The recipient already has a shaker. They do not have a second shaker. What they lack is either a consumable they will not buy for themselves, or the one tool that fixes a problem they have noticed but not diagnosed — usually that their drinks come out differently every time.
Under R500
- A proper citrus press. Unglamorous and used every single time. The gap between fresh and bottled citrus is bigger than the gap between a cheap gin and an expensive one.
- Two good rocks glasses. Two, not six. Heavy base, thin rim.
- Angostura, Peychaud's and orange bitters. Three small bottles that last years and quietly upgrade everything.
- A bottle of decent sweet vermouth, with a note telling them to keep it in the fridge. Genuinely the most common fixable mistake in a home bar.
R500–R1 000
